Guests from Budapest at LCC

2024-10-10

The Philology Program at LCC International University was happy to host our guests from Hungary, October 1-4, 2024.

Dr. Judit Nagy serves as the chair of the Philology program within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Budapest, Hungary. Dr. Nagy visited LCC with Dora Toth, administrative assistant, for the week as part of an Erasmus faculty mobility program.

The Erasmus program for faculty mobility offers funding for professors to visit universities around Europe. During the visit, the guest faculty speaks in several classes which are related to their field and interacts with faculty at the host institution.

Dr. Nagy’s expertise is in the analysis of short stories. She published her research in multicultural literature, especially the Dutch diaspora in Canada and Korean Canadians. Dr. Nagy is also interested in vocabulary development for English learners, and intercultural linguistics, such as humor and non-verbal communication.

Our students were privileged to hear Dr. Nagy speak in our North American literature course about the movement and culture of people from the Netherlands to Canada in the 19th and 20th centuries. The next day, Dr. Nagy visited a writing course for first year students, and a writing course for third year students. On Thursday, Dr. Nagy engaged our English majors during their sociolinguistics course.

One key agenda item for the visit was to explore the potential for LCC and Károli Gáspár University to collaborate. Several program chairs met with Dr. Nagy and Ms. Toth to brainstorm ideas for academic cooperation, including research groups and conferences.

It was not all hard work! One day, we hosted our guests for a tasty lunch. One evening, they participated in Culture Night in the Michealsen Centras, an interactive event hosted by the Intercultural Team. We enjoyed many cups of tea together.

Erasmus funds are also available for student exchanges in Europe. Our LCC students have studied at Károli Gáspár University and LCC hosts several students from Károli Gáspár. English majors especially benefit from the opportunity to study interesting literature courses offered at Károli Gáspár that are not offered at LCC.

A special thank you for Emily Johnston, the Director of LCC’s Center for International Education for organizing the details and the logistics of this visit.
