LCC International University > News and Events archive > Moose Basketball: Season Overview
As we come to the end of the academic year, this is a good time to look back and reflect on a vital aspect of LCC‘s vibrant student life – the basketball season. We celebrate with our student-athletes. Here are some of the key highlights of our Moose teams from this year.
With new additions to the coaching staff, the LCC Moose men‘s team made significant progress. The team played in the Lithuanian Student Basketball League where they achieved 4th place. The team also played in the third-ranked professional league and finished the regular season in 9th place with 14 wins and 16 losses. The team made it to the playoffs, but lost against the P. Olimpas team.
The men’s team has also volunteered in social events organized by Moose where both teams go to schools and give physical education classes to pupils. It‘s also worth noting that participating in tournaments and regular training does not come at the expense of academic achievement. The average GPA across the team is 8.4/10, with 3 players graduating in May and 2 players graduating in December. With some of our players ending their academic journey at LCC and receiving their diplomas, we are putting a big effort into recruiting new players for the next season.
This has been a history-making year! Thanks to the recruitment and practices during the summer of 2022, our LCC Moose women’s team had a thriving season. In January, we added another top talent player to our team. With new basketball players and coaches, the women’s team was able to make Moose basketball history.
In the Baltic Basketball League, we reached the playoffs. Every game was watched by around 1000 spectators, at the arena and via live broadcast combined. Viewership data showed that our women’s team was the most watched team in the entire league. Thanks to the support of our amazing fans at LCC, the team was able to achieve resounding victories against strong rivals Neptunas and Riga TTT. In the regular season of the Baltic league, we finished in 7th place.
In the Lithuanian League, we recently won the bronze medal. In the best of five series, we beat the opposing team in 3-straight games.
In February, our head coach, Vilius Stanisauskas, was given an award by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda for achievements in women’s basketball. Also, our player Laurita Jurciute was invited to the Lithuanian women’s national team.
It’s important to note once again that these achievements go hand in hand with academic success – the women's team’s GPA is 9.3/10. They are a perfect example of what it means to be professional student-athletes. On top of that, the LCC Moose women’s basketball team takes part in social projects, such as Lithuanian Basketball Federation’s “Stronger Me,” where teams go to high schools and present basketball as a healthy lifestyle choice and competitive sport.
LCC recently submitted our report to the Klaipeda municipality, which is funding the LCC Moose women’s team. They rated our work as excellent and will provide 129,000 EUR for the team for next year.
This summer of 2023, two basketball camps will be organized from August 7-20. Boys and girls from 6 to 14 years old are welcome to attend our basketball camp. Working together with Klaipėda V. Knašiaus basketball school, the camps will include professional basketball coaches and young athletes. The camps will involve educational activities and sports training.
During the summer of 2023, the current Moose men's team head coach, Gytis Krugelevicius, will be the head coach of the U18 Lithuanian women's team. Assisting him will be the current Moose men's team assistant coach Andrius Steponaitis.
