Professor Ewert: A decade of service at LCC

2021-03-09

Dr. Doreen Ewert is at the top of her professional career, and she is going strong! LCC International University’s MA TESOL program is honored that Dr. Doreen Ewert is a full professor in the program for 10 years. Dr. Ewert brings outstanding expertise to LCC’s MA TESOL Program.

Our MA TESOL students know Dr. Ewert personally as a keen, supportive, brilliant person who keeps the conversation lively and interesting. Over the past decade, Dr. Ewert has served as a thesis advisor to twelve (12) MA TESOL students, guiding them through the research and writing process to produce outstanding research reports. As an instructor, Doreen guides students from the initial steps of forming research questions to choosing research methods and collecting data, to writing a thesis. As a thesis advisor, Dr. Ewert helps students to choose manageable research topics and then challenges students to produce their very best final thesis.

Doreen started her teaching career at Fresno Pacific College, in California, USA, where she also served in several administrative capacities including directing short-term English programs in Vietnam and Japan. For two years, Doreen taught English in Warsaw, Poland, before returning to Fresno.

After completing her PhD at Indiana University in TESOL and Applied Linguistics, Doreen stayed at Indiana University, serving as associate professor in the Department of Second Languages and the Director of English Language Instruction at IU, a university of over 90,000 students.

In 2012, Dr. Ewert accepted a faculty position at the University of San Francisco in the Department of Rhetoric and Language, where she currently serves as the Director of the Academic English for Multilingual Students Program. Dr. Ewert was promoted to Professor in 2018.

Currently, in addition to her full time professorship at USF, Dr. Ewert serves as a top tier leader of the Commission on English Language Programs Accreditation (CEA). In her role with CEA, Doreen is a key decision maker for accreditation of over 300 post-secondary, intensive English programs across the world.

Dr. Ewert has given 54 professional presentations and 30 workshops on topics ranging from extensive reading to vocabulary development, to literacy and fluency development. She is a regular presenter at national and international conferences of TESOL and the American Association of Applied Linguistics.  Even more importantly, Dr. Ewert has authored or coauthored 14 publications in peer-reviewed journals.

This summer, LCC will recognize Dr. Doreen Ewert for a decade of service to the MA TESOL program. We are grateful for Doreen’s dedication to her students and to the professional field of TESOL.
